Paraguay Biodiversity was designed to document data about the paraguayan fauna and flora.
Our purpose is to present reliable biogeographic datas and photographic records about our specie richness.
The page is under continuous construction and is growing steadily, but the huge amount of species and data is slowing down this increase. The lists of the two families Saturniidae and Sphingidae (Insecta: Lepidoptera) could be considered nearly complete as we dispose on continuous records over more than thirty years.
Working out the maps we were using our own data only or in some cases data of persons we confide in. Maps of distribution, or better observation-points of the birds of Paraguay will coming soon.
Elaborating maps of distribution of a species would need a dense net of observers and records during many years. Even so the map would not show the actual distribution of the species, but only historical because of the fast environmental changes. Radical habitat-destruction and changes in micro-climate leads to the disappearance of many species and turning up of a few others. We do not yet well understand mechanisms of adaptation or extinction, expansion or retrocession, because of ignoring the response of the species to the ecological factors.
Additionally we present photo-galleries of different taxanomic gruops, with preference to those of living specimenes in their natural habitat. All of these photos were made in different places in Paraguay. Later on the available data of any taxon will be compiled and maps of their distribution/observation will be worked out.
Our thanks to the taxonomists, experts in their groups, who helped us with identifications. Others specialists promised to do so in future. Credits will be mentioned in the chapters of their authority.
